Whether it's in front of thousands of festivarians, hundreds of friendly bar dancers, dozens of fellow pickers, or each other in the studio, Oakhurst leaves it all on the field. This quintet brings their stories to the stage in the form of pure energy and passion for acoustic music. With gifted percussion and a driving low end, the banjo, guitar, fiddle and vocals have all the space they need to tell you a story. Love, life, loss, and whiskey are likely to be the topic of the day- come on and jump in the get down for a spell.... The band spikes traditional bluegrass with rock & roll and a kamikaze rhythmic sensibility. That danceable concoction along with stringed shootouts, ringing harmonies, and citybilly swagger keeps the band in high demand. Oakhurst’s unpretentious, go-for-it interpretation of a genre that's roots are often handled reverently, sparks interest in bluegrass by folks who don’t know Doc Watson from Doc Holliday.
Oakhurst’s work ethic and road hardened sound has made them one of the most successful acts from Colorado earning them the chance to perform at legendary venues like the Fillmore and Red Rocks. Oakhurst has played multiple major festivals, 33 U.S. states and 13 countries across Europe and the Caribbean. The band's third album, Jump in the Get Down, received airplay on over 200 radio stations nationwide. The spins not only earned the quintet spots on the Americana, Bluegrass and Jamband charts, but an even larger national following. The most recent offering, Barrel (produced by Joe Pisapia), received acclaim and showcased their ever-evolving sound.
That hybridized, hard-to-categorize sound had Oakhurst nominated by Denver’s Westword Magazine for a 4 year run as the best band in different categories each year. Oakhurst captured the “Best Bluegrass Band” honor in 2007, against stiff competition, and continues to be recognized by Westword and others as one of the best Bluegrass bands in Colorado to this day.
Oakhurst’s broad appeal and nebulous style has earned them spots on stages with very diverse national talent: John Mayer, John Hiatt, The Flaming Lips, The Avett Brothers, The Infamous Stringdusters, Brett Dennen, Emmylou Harris, Barenaked Ladies, Patti Griffin, Yard Dogs Roadshow, Béla Fleck, Gaelic Storm, G. Love, Umphrey’s McGee, The Radiators, Junior Brown, Lyle Lovett, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Johnny Lang & Guster, Leftover Salmon, Yonder Mountain String Band, Devotchka, Rose Hill Drive, the Motet, Emmitt –Nershi Band, Great American Taxi and band mentor Pete Wernick, among other excellent musicians.
