Stopping Locust Plague With Truck Mounted Acoustic Weapons

Author: Lance Winslow

Is it possible to stop a locust plague with an acoustic weapon or sound device mounted in a giant semi-truck? How could this be done? One recent member of an online think tank, thinking ahead of spring and summer when locusts maybe likely to swarm thinks this may all be possible. The think tanker states:

"This is a job for a sound engineering corporation like http://www.bose.com."

Indeed the idea of stopping a locust swarm with a giant sound weapon is a job for those who study sound. I agree and I had met an interesting group from the DARPA Challenge, which had made a Stereo Concept Sensor for directional sound waves. The trick it to get the sound everywhere and yes you would need some cutting edge acoustical engineers to figure it out. I very much enjoyed reading the Bose website. Very excellent stuff indeed. I concur very much that this is a job for a group like this.

The think tanker further states; There is another company that has a directional sound generator (really can't call it a speaker) that delivers sound to a very specific location

Yes, I had correspondence with an MIT genius working on this stuff. Great stuff indeed. Directional sound technologies are the answer I believe to focusing on the locusts. Maybe we could mount the thing in an old work horse like a C-130 and fly over it with an acoustical directional array and simply fly around the swarm and cut it down with sound waves like they do with the AC-130 Gun Ship the array would stay focused on the target while the aircraft flew.

Of course a large blimp might be better as the speed of flight is less. Only problem is getting it there in time to catch up with the locusts. A redesigned blimp which had a TAS of lets say 130 Kts due to its shape could fly there and then land and load the array and then plump up to hold the weight of the Sound Technology Device and then go get the locusts. A War on Locust Plagues, rather than warring against mankinds own. United in a common cause to stop the locust swarms which devastate the land could indeed be a wonderful plan. Imagine this in 2006.
