Five Resume Mistakes to Avoid

Author: Amy Smith

Avoid these resume mistakes and move your resume to the top of the stack.

Speaking in Code
Unless youre an IT professional, anyone should be able to understand your resume. For example, dont use the term CRM (Customer Relationship Management) unless it refers to a specific software package, not your ability to manage a customer base.

Email Oops
If your email address is TooHot4u@hottie.com, open a new account to be used solely for your job search. Make sure to delete blogs or profiles attached to your email address that you wouldnt want your future employer to see.

Wordy Woodpecker
Carefully examine each bullet point and determine if it describes a new skill or is repetitive. While youre at it, make sure the text in the employment and education sections uses bullet points rather than paragraphs.

ABCs
Check and recheck all areas of the resume. A mistake in spelling or grammar is the fastest way to get your resume in the circular file! Hint: The word Manager is one of the most commonly misspelled words on resumes spellcheck wont catch Manger.

Liar, Liar!
Recruiters love to tell the story of catching an applicant in a lie. Carefully examine dates, statistics, skills and education. Be prepared to answer in depth questions about everything on your resume and provide documentation as needed. If you dont have a degree, its ok to list the dates and schools you attended along with the course of study just not a formal BS or BA title.

There are plenty of other mistakes job seekers make every day but avoiding these five will improve your chances of landing an interview.
