Important Information About Contact Lenses

Author: Brian Johansson

Contacts are a great way to improve your vision with out having to sacrifice your look. There are also many different style and comfort options for contact wearer's so that there is just about something for everyone. Early designs of contact lenses offered only one hard glass option that had to be taken out every night and cleaned. They were expensive and could warp over time. Disposable contacts were made of a soft plastic and still needed to be taken out every night, but they were only to be used for two weeks at a time. This kept a fresh pair of contacts in your eye that provided much more comfort. Along with comfort, color options appeared that could change the appearance of your iris. This was done by making a speckled ring of color on the contact around where the pupil is. This was more ideal for people with lighter colored eyes, because brown eyes are too dark.

The newest style of contact lenses are the most comfortable to date. They are porous so that the eye is not totally sealed off from oxygen. Some of these lenses are designed to be worn 24 hours a day. Keeping the lenses in all the time does require a different type of eye drop that will aid in cleaning them since they will not be removed at night to sit in a cleaning solution.

There are some alternatives to contact lenses, but most people are still wary of them because they require some form of surgery. Radio keratotomy is a procedure where slits are made across the lense inside of the eyeball. These slits alter the shape of the lense changing its magnification. This is a safe procedure because it can be reversed if the results are not acceptable. There is also a procedure where a lense is inserted into the surface of the eyeball. It acts like a permanent contact lense. This is also very safe because it does not affect the cornea, and the lense can be removed. Lasik surgery is a popular alternative because it does promise an easy laser surgery that can be done with instant results. However, you may have complications that are irreversible because the laser permanently alters the cornea.
