Tents - How to Choose the Right One

Author: S. Bennett

Probably one of the most important elements of a great camping trip is having the right tent. Choose the wrong one and it can be a miserable experience. With the right sized tent your camping experience will leave you wondering when the next trip will be.

So, how do you pick the right tent for you? Well that depends on a few factors.

How many will be using the tent?
How much room you will need for supplies?
How long will your trip be?
What kind of trip you will be taken?

How many is going to be using the tent is probably the most important factor to consider. If the tent is to small it could mean a very restless night. You will need room for each person to lay outstretched as well as have room for the gear. You don't want bodies all scrunched up all night, that makes for a not very good morning. Tents come in various sizes, so you should be able to find one that fits your needs just right.

What size? Well lets look at a few scenarios. A single person on a short trip would not need more than a one person tent, but that same person on a longer trip would probably want a two person tent. A small group of three or four would use a four person tent. Up to six can fit comfortably in a six person tent. If you have a large family or group of friends then one of the larger seven or more person tents with two or three rooms should give you the room and privacy that you need.

The next two factors go hand in hand, how much room you need for supplies and how long you plan to camp. Of course the longer you are camping the more gear and supplies you are going to need, and therefore the more storage space you will need. For example if you have two couples camping for a weekend you would need a four or six person tent at the most. But if you take those same two couples camping for a week you may want to get one of the larger three room tents. This way each couple has their own room and a common area in the middle to store the gear in.

Just a quick note on what kind of trip you are going to be taken. If you are going on a back country hiking trip you may want to look for one of the lightweight hiking backpack tents. This will help cut down on the strain of carrying your tent on the hiking trails.

There are also factors based on individual preferences as well. As long as you consider the four basic factors:

How many? (people)
How much? (gear)
How long?
What kind of trip?

You should be able to find the perfect tent for your camping trip!
