Changing Table, Should You Buy One?

Author: Joyce Dietzel

Nobody loves diaper changes but babies soil their diapers a lot. That's why there's always a need for a changing table every now and then. A changing table is one comfortable place to change the baby's diapers. Comfort is important. It should be comfortable both for you and your baby. And that's because it is going to be used often, that's for sure. It has been observed that before the baby turns one, you needed to do more than two thousand trips to the changing table.

Although there are other known alternatives to a good old changing table, those few still cannot replace it. A thick changing pad was introduced. A waterproof pad is being used. And a lot of mothers just do diaper changes on the baby's crib. These are all fine, if you can live with it. But if you are after your and your baby's convenience, you are all better off with a changing table. Here's why:

1. A changing table is safe. Compared to a mere changing pad, a changing table is way safer. First off, its height is measured to be just right for you. Whereas a changing pad placed on top of an ordinary dresser drawer may be too high for you to change your baby on. Also, a changing table comes with straps to hold the baby while you change him. And a rail guard too, for added protection. With changing pad, you always has to be extra careful and hold that baby because with any sudden movement, the baby and the changing pad may both fall off the dresser.

2. It is more relaxing than doing it at the crib. Well, you can't sit on a crib, can you? And even if you can, a baby's crib is so small to accommodate you and the baby. Much more for your supplies like diapers, baby wipes, baby powders, and lotions. You'll have to put these supplies in a basket and stash it maybe under the baby's crib. And when you just lie your baby on his crib and proceed to change him there, then you are going to arch your back for a few minutes until you are done. And you are bound to do this for more than six times a day. If you are up to the challenge, that should be fine.

3. It is worth its price. A changing table is just somewhere between a hundred dollars to two hundred. Some even come with a dresser drawer. It's worth your investment because you are going to it use all the time. That's all it costs for your baby's diaper change safety and comfort. And you're going to buy a baby dresser anyway, right?

4. It is a good furniture addition. A lot of these changing tables are made of fine oak and maple wood. You can get those too. That is, if you intend to use it for other purposes in the future, maybe when the baby grows up. Nonetheless, it also comes with cutesy designs that will go along with your nursery's theme.

Remember, changing tables are not all a luxury. It is one thing needed by every parent and baby out there. If you are having second thoughts of getting one, don't. Just go ahead and get it. Once you have it, you'll regret why you did not hear about it or buy it sooner.
