Curious about Online Dating? Learn How to Get Started

Author: Jill Kane

Online Dating has become so popular that it seems like almost everyone has tried it at one time or another. If you haven't tried it yet, you should consider it. Some people are hesitant to try it because they don't understand how it works or they are uncomfortable trying something new. The truth is, online dating is actually a great way to use the Internet to broaden your dating horizons, opening up all kinds of new possibilities that you wouldn't otherwise have because of problems with distance and communication limits.

Taking the First Step

Online dating is quite easy as long as you have a connection to the Internet. Finding the right site is important, so do take the time to check out several online dating sites to find one you're comfortable navigating and that appeals to in terms of what it offers. There are sites for just about any kind of lifestyle, sexual preference, age group and religious or cultural background. By doing some quick searches, you can find several that will suit your different interests.

Once you've chosen a few sites that you'd like to try, be sure to read through their rules and regulations. Most will require you to join up and pay a membership fee in order to have full access to all of the services, but there are some good ones out there that are free. There are also quite a few these days that will give you a free trial for anywhere from three to ten days with full use of the service before you have to pay the membership fee. This is a good way to "test drive" the site and see if you like it.

Profiles and Pictures

After you've joined an online dating site, you will need to create a profile, which will usually include an opening sentence or title that is supposed to grab the attention of other members. Your profile is the essay that describes you once someone gets past the opening title. It should tell enough about you to give others an idea of what you're like without giving everything away. Make it intriguing and playful, but not too suggestive, and you will probably generate lots of interest. It's also important to be upbeat and honest. Your profile will also need to let others know what kind of person and relationship you are interested in. After all, if you aren't interested in anything serious, a marriage-minded person probably wouldn't want to waste their time (or yours!) Almost all sites also allow you to attach a photo of yourself. This should be a recent photo of you, preferably a close-up. Keep it simple and clear without a lot of background clutter. Profiles that include photos get many times more responses than those that don't have pictures.

You have two options once you have set up your profile. You can be relatively passive, and wait for others to contact you first, or you can send out emails or instant messages to others whose profiles seem interesting to you. Online dating websites also offer extras like chat rooms so that you can talk to lots of people at the same time and special events, so log in often to see what's going on. Since online dating sites are open twenty-four hours a day, you can always meet someone new, no matter what time of day or night!
