In 2016, Venus opened for Grammy winner Gregory Porter at The Chautauqua Amphitheater in Boulder, and played at Denver's Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) and City Park Jazz. Also in 2016, she performed at the Prince Tribute at Red Rocks and the Chautauqua Community House, as the featured guest for their curated music series.
Venus has won Westword's Best R&B Vocalist Award, was named Westword’s Best Jazz Vocalist in 2018 and is presently a nominee in the weekly magazine's soul category for 2019. She has held residencies at Appaloosa Grill, Dazzle Jazz, Ophelia's and El Chapultepec. In 2019, Venus will host/emcee the Central City Jazz Festival. She is also host and DJ of the popular radio show "Jazz Odyssey," every Wednesday (10 p.m.-12 a.m.) on KUVO.org 89.3 FM, which regularly features guest appearances and interviews with music luminaries such as Derrick Hodge, Dennis Ham (Thundercat), Taylor McFerrin, Dave King (The Bad Plus) and others.
"Venus Cruz has a super-advanced ear, a way with words and a spirit that connects with people. She is also a brilliant lyricist who infuses the poignant with a sense of humor." — Greg Harris, jazz musician/composer, PhD Music
Lady Gang is Jen Korte as she artfully steps outside of the familiar and moves toward the discomfort of a good idea. The artist’s risk takes listeners for a ride that demands our attention. Lady Gang defies not only what we think we know about our favorite local artist but also what we thought we knew about musical technology.
Jen Korte is known to us as both a solo artist as well as a champion collaborator, is well versed in all genres of music, and played every venue you’ve heard of from Denver to Caribbean. A career rooted in both indie rock and hiphop seems to be the only backdrop that could help make sense of Lady Gang’s calculated execution of sound that drips with originality and soul.
Having opened for national acts like The Pharcyde, Mac Lethal and Wax, and Nappy Roots, along with being nominated for ‘Best Singer-Songwriter” by Denver Westword in 2018 snd currently 2019, fans are taking note.
