Benefits of Essential Fatty Acids

Author: Bill Herren

Essential fatty acids are fatty acids which are required in the diet. They are required in the diet because the body cannot produce them so they must be obtained by food or supplement intake. The essential fatty acids consist of the Omega 3 and the Omega 6 essential fatty acids. Omega 9 is needed by the body but can be produced if Omega 3 and 6 is present therefore it is not considered "essential".

Some of the reported benefits of essential fatty acids are:

" Reducing hypertension

" Improving heart health

" Help with mild depression

" Help with autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and Raynaud's syndrome

" Aid with cancer prevention

" Immune function

" Skin conditions such as dermatitis and eczema

" Diabetes

These are just a few of the reported benefits - search and you will likely find many more reported benefits.

Foods known to be good sources of Omega 3's are nuts, soybean and canola oil, walnut oil, and flaxseed oil. Coldwater fish such as bluefish, herring, tuna, cod, and salmon are good sources as well.

Foods known to be good sources of Omega 6's are cereals, poultry, eggs, some vegetable oils, some baked goods, and whole grain breads just to name a few. It is thought by some that our western diet provides us sufficient Omega 6 essential fatty acids.

If you are considering supplementing in order to get benefits of essential fatty acids consider a formulation which has a good blend of the omega 3 and omega 6 essential fatty acids if you feel you are not getting quality Omega 6's through your diet.

If you do think you are getting quality Omega 6's through your diet then consider good quality flax oil for your Omega 3 needs. Purchasing online is a great way to save money. Remember that essential fatty acids go rancid rather quickly so refrigerate immediately after opening. Because of the nature of essential fatty acids you cannot cook with them - however, you can use them as salad dressings or toppings. I have always been able to take my flax oil straight from the bottle. I find it to have a pleasant nutty like taste.

I wish for you the best of health.
