New standards of mobile phone technology

Author: Olivia Andrews

Earlier mobile phones was just a means of communication but now it is considered to be a fashion statement. As mobile technology is taking new turns with the introduction of screensavers, ringtones, embedded mp3 player and with the latest mms services no one is left untouched.

Multimedia messaging service (MMS) is a new global messaging standard that allows pictures, animation, voice and music to be sent as a multimedia message. MMS is available to the users who have a mobile phone with MMS enabled into it. There are certain benefits of MMS over the simple short text message or SMS whereby you can combine graphics, sound and text in the message you send. As such if you wan to send the image of a birthday cake you can even attach a birthday song with some sort of personalized message.

You can easily use MMS services by sending MMS from an MMS phone to another MMS phone. You can also send MMS from an MMS phone to a non- MMS phone also known as legacy phone. Since legacy phones are unable to display MMS, an SMS notification that contains a URL, message ID and password shall be sent to enable the recipient to view the MMS via the internet. There is also an option to send MMS from an MMS phone to an email address.

There is also Enhanced Message Service (EMS) which is an extension to the short message service for mobile phones that allows for the transmission of formatted text, icons, animations and ringtones. In most of the cell phone models, it allows up to 17 SMS message sto be strung together.

3rd Generation Partnership project (3GPP), a cooperation of international standard bodies for the promotion of cellular systems that support high speed data has also been formed in the year 1998 and it is responsible for the 3G specifications for GSM systems using the WCDMA air interface. It also supports AAC music, AMR speech and MPEG-4 and H.264 video using the .3GP file extension.
