Intoxication makes a driver vulnerable and incapable of maneuvering a motor vehicle. In spite of these dangers, many drivers in the US continue to drive in a drunken state, endangering their own lives, as well as those of innocent bystanders.

Though the offense cannot be completely controlled by law enforcement officers, certain measures go a long way in reducing the occurrence of such offenses. The imposition of heavy fines on the offender has been an effective method of controlling DUI offenses. When an offender is fined, it serves as a way to keep him from repeating the offense, because he has paid a price for his actions.

However, depending on the blood alcohol content levels and the cooperation with the cops, the amount charged as fines can vary. DUI fines also vary depending on the nature of the offense. This is determined by checking the probabilities of an accident or the seriousness of an accident that has occurred. Fines are also dependant on an offender's past records. If a person is a first time DUI offenders or a second time offender, the amount imposed as fine will be lower. When a person has multiple DUI convictions, along with the heavy fines imposed, the offender may even have to serve a sentence.

DUI fines are mostly used for law and federal purposes. A large portion of these fines is used to bear the expenses of housing inmates. Along with a standardized DUI fine, new provisions in the law include imposing additional fines to fund construction and upkeep of prisons. This practice has been incorporated keeping in mind that many DUI arrests lead to the offenders serving jail sentences. DUI fines are mostly used for law and federal purposes.
